The Riad — A Walkable World for Art

An art portfolio you can step inside.

Mahmoud Halat’s browser-based art experiment: a courtyard, gallery, study and workbench that invite people to explore the work as a place.

The Riad

Challenge

Give original art a setting that visitors can explore, while keeping the work and its author at the centre of the experience.

Solution

Built a browser-based world with distinct rooms for art, reading and studio work. Used the project’s own scenes and film excerpts to document the experiment.

The Riad is an interactive world by Mahmoud Halat, built for the web. It brings original art and studio work into a courtyard, gallery, study and workbench, letting visitors move through a place rather than a conventional portfolio grid.

The experiment follows the geometry and atmosphere of a riad. Architecture provides a setting for the art and the stories behind it. These are rendered scenes from the project, not photographs of a physical property.

We documented the experiment with excerpts from the experience and a longer account of how it came together. Visit the live world, then read the project journal for the thinking behind the rooms.
