How much does a website cost in Toronto? Most small businesses pay $1,500 to $15,000. Freelancers sit at the low end of this year's range and small studios at the top. After launch, budget $25 to $200 a month for hosting and upkeep.
All prices here come from eight national price pages we read in September 2026 and are in Canadian dollars, except ours (Space & Story's), which are in American dollars; where a studio names no currency, we assume it is Canadian. Every one is published by a company that sells websites or hosting, GoDaddy included, so treat each figure as what that seller says it charges, not as an independent survey.
Our website cost guide covers the wider market across the continent in American dollars; this post stays local.
Key facts
- The floor sits lower: Elevate Web Design publishes a 3-page starter site at $599, plus a monthly fee.
- Freelance builds start around $1,500 (SyncSpark).
- A professional small-business build starts around $3,000 (Ankit Designs).
- Domains cost about $20 a year.
- The costs most often left out of a quote are copy and photos.
How much does a website cost in Toronto in 2026?
A website costs as little as $170 a year if you build it yourself on a template and can pass $80,000 at a large agency, and which of the options below you pick decides most of that gap.
| Option | Typical price (CAD) | What you usually get | Source | |---|---|---|---| | DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy) | $170 to $336 a year | A template you build and maintain yourself | GoDaddy Canada | | Budget Toronto studio | $599 to $1,500 | 3 to 5 pages, template-based, basic setup for search | Elevate, The Website Architect, Intrango | | Freelancer | $1,500 to $5,000 | A built site; quality varies widely by who you hire | SyncSpark | | Small studio or agency | $3,000 to $15,000+ | Custom design, 5 to 10 pages, more strategy | Ankit Designs, Elevate blog | | Full-service agency | $20,000 to $80,000+ | Large scope, longer process, bigger team | Elevate blog | | Large custom website | $10,000 to $100,000 | Custom features, integrations, heavier hosting | GoDaddy Canada |
Elevate Web Design, The Website Architect and Intrango publish their own prices, so the low end is easy to check.
| Toronto studio | Published price | Notes | |---|---|---| | Elevate Web Design | Starter $599 + $69/mo; Professional $1,995 + $129/mo; Custom $2,995+ + $199/mo | Starter is up to 3 pages with hosting; Professional up to 10 pages | | The Website Architect | Essential from $999; Signature from $1,999; E-Commerce from $2,999 | $100 per extra page; a 5-page Essential site is $1,500 | | Intrango | Small business site $950 to $1,100; bespoke site $4,000 to $10,000 | The page carries no date, so confirm with them |
The national guides land in the same place. OnePage Pro, a Montreal studio, puts most small business sites in the low thousands with a ceiling around $10,000. Idea Marketing in Vancouver puts large agencies at $20,000 and up for the same kind of site.
What does a website cost per month in Canada?
A small business website costs about $10 to $50 a month to keep online. Once someone else handles updates and security, the bill rises to $50 to $200.
Unlike the build, it never stops.
| Monthly or yearly cost | Typical price (CAD) | Source | |---|---|---| | Domain name | $10 to $30 a year (about $20 is typical) | OnePage Pro, GoDaddy Canada | | Shared hosting | $5.49 to $12.99 a month at GoDaddy; $5 to $50 in general | GoDaddy Canada, OnePage Pro | | Business email | $6 to $12 per mailbox a month | Elevate blog | | Maintenance and security | $25 to $100 a month | OnePage Pro | | Agency maintenance plan | $50 to $600 a month (small agency); $300 to $1,200+ (large) | Idea Marketing | | Bundled studio plan (hosting plus updates) | $69 to $199 a month | Elevate |
Before you compare quotes, add the monthly cost to the build, as OnePage Pro's guide does.
Now add $50 a month for hosting and maintenance to a $4,000 build. The first year costs $4,600. Elevate's $599 starter site, monthly fee included, totals $1,427 in its first year. The gap shrinks.
What drives the price up?
Page count, custom features and who writes the words move a local quote the most, and Ankit Designs lists the same drivers plus template versus custom design.
- Each extra page adds $100 at The Website Architect.
- Extra features, like a booking form or a custom widget, get quoted by the hour outside the package.
- A designer-built online store starts at $5,000 for a small to medium shop, going by GoDaddy's guide.
- Copy costs $300 to $2,500 to write (Elevate's guide) and is often missing from the quote.
- A photo shoot costs $500 to $3,500, per the same guide.
The last two catch people out.
A "5-page site" quote often means five pages of design waiting for your words and photos, so ask who writes the copy before you sign; it is one of the questions to ask a web designer before hiring.
What do you get at each price point?
A bigger budget buys more custom design, more pages and more help after launch, and here is how the published packages line up, from a three-page starter at the bottom to full agency scope at the top.
| Budget (CAD) | What the published packages include | |---|---| | Under $1,000 | Up to 3 pages, mobile layout, contact form, hosting and SSL, launch search setup (Elevate Starter) | | $1,000 to $3,000 | Up to 10 pages, lead forms, a blog, analytics, monthly minor updates (Elevate Professional); a 5-page Signature site at $2,500 (The Website Architect) | | $5,000 to $15,000 | 5 to 10 pages, custom design system, real photography, copywriting help, Google Business Profile work, local schema, booking, 1 to 3 months of support (Elevate's mid-market tier) | | $20,000 and up | Full-service agency scope with a larger team and a longer timeline |
The local schema in the $5,000 row deserves a second look. Schema is code that tells search engines and AI tools what your business is and where it is, which helps a business get named inside answers from ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, the work called answer engine optimization.
Most of the guides above never price it, and SyncSpark is the only exception, including it in custom sites from $3,000.
ChatGPT already sends buyers to local studios (us included), but a site that AI tools cannot read, however good it looks, never gets that chance, and our guide to answer engine optimization explains what that work involves.
What does Space & Story charge?
Our builds start at $2,500 plus a monthly plan. Custom software starts at $15,000. Both are in American dollars. That is the currency we bill in, so we quote them here instead of guessing at an exchange rate.
| Build tier | Price (USD) | What it is for | |---|---|---| | Site | $2,500 | A fast site with the copy written for you, up to about 8 pages | | Story | $5,000 | A custom design system, a blog seeded with 5 posts, your video and podcast content turned into pages | | Engine | $9,000 | Many services or locations: one template, hundreds of pages generated from your own data | | Studio | $15,000+ | Software on top of the site: booking, ecommerce, a portal |
| Monthly plan | Price (USD) | Job | |---|---|---| | Local | $300/mo | Get found in your area; hosting, upkeep and a monthly report | | Growth | $700/mo | Outrank competitors with monthly posts and link building | | Authority | $2,000+/mo | Become the source AI tools cite |
Every build needs at least the Local plan, so the cheapest pairing is a Site build on Local, which comes to $6,100 in the first year. The Studio tier needs Authority.
Every tier includes copy we write and the work to get found in AI search, and the monthly plan covers hosting. We charge no setup fee. The plan runs month to month, and you own the code, the content and the domain. The full breakdown is on our pricing page, and our list of the city's best web design agencies shows where we sit among other studios.
Is a cheap website a false economy?
Not always. A $599 site or a DIY builder is the right call when you need to look credible fast and have only a few services to show. Jacob Brown, founder of Elevate Web Design, draws the line in his cost guide.
> "Spend more than $5,000 only when you have multiple locations, real e-commerce volume ($250K+/year), or regulated-industry compliance needs (healthcare, legal, finance)."
He sells cheap sites. So read that as a seller's rule, though it is still a fair one for a new business. A cheap site gets expensive in two cases.
- You pay mid-range money for a template result. SyncSpark calls this "the expensive mistake": a site that cannot rank or convert, leaving you "paying again to replace it".
- You outgrow the builder. Leaving Wix or Squarespace later means rebuilding pages and search settings, which we cover in our switching guide.
We did not request quotes from these studios or judge their work, so the prices here are only what each company chooses to publish. Before you spend anything, our free AI search and speed audit shows what your current site is missing, and if you want to read our case for custom design, it is in why custom web design beats templates.
