Key Takeaway

A brand reel is about 20 seconds of motion design built from the brand kit a business already has: its logo, colours, fonts, the words on its site and screenshots of its work. It tells a visitor who you are before they read a word, it matches everything else you put out, and one reel works on your homepage, LinkedIn, a pitch and a showroom screen. Skip it until your brand and your website copy are settled.

A brand reel is about 20 seconds of motion design built from the brand kit you already have: your logo, colours, fonts, the words on your website and screenshots of your work. There is no shoot day and no stock footage. As of September 2026 there are two on our brand reels page: our own, and one we made for Lotso Travel, an eSIM store.

What is a brand reel, exactly?

A brand reel is a short piece of motion graphics that shows what a business looks and sounds like, using only material the business owns. Your mark moves, your name animates, your best work slides past, and all of it lands on the beat of music written for your reel.

It says the same things your website says. Every line of text in our reel comes from our homepage, down to the closing line, "Get found, then get booked." Nothing new gets invented for the video, so the reel and the site back each other up.

Why does a small business need a brand reel?

Because most people decide whether you look credible before they read anything. A brand reel makes that first impression on purpose instead of leaving it to a stock photo and a paragraph.

It tells your story in the time people actually give you. Wistia's 2026 State of Video report, drawn from more than 13 million videos, found that "the shorter the video, the higher the engagement rate" (report). Its guide to video length puts videos under a minute at an average 52% engagement rate (guide). Twenty seconds is enough for who you are, what you have built and what you promise.

It looks like you, everywhere. A reel made from your own kit uses the exact colours on your trucks, the type on your signage and the logo on your invoices. Every place it plays adds to the same picture of your business, which is how people start to recognise you.

It shows the work instead of describing it. Ours puts a wall of real client sites on screen and counts past twenty. A builder can show finished homes, an installer can show finished rooms. Proof on screen does more than an adjective in a paragraph.

It gives you something worth posting. Plenty of small businesses have nothing to put on LinkedIn between projects. A reel is a strong post on its own, and it opens every pitch you give after that.

It only needs the files you already have. No crew on site, no scheduling around a job, no one on your team in front of a camera. That is the same idea behind our hero films: the first screen, built from what you already own.

Brand reel vs sizzle reel vs explainer vs hero film

A sizzle reel cuts together footage you already filmed, and an explainer teaches how something works. A hero film loops behind a website headline. A brand reel animates your brand kit into a short piece with its own music.

Adobe calls sizzle reels "short promotional videos" that also go by names like highlight reels, show reels and teasers, and says most now run about one to two minutes (Adobe). The difference that matters when you buy is the raw material. A sizzle reel needs footage. A brand reel needs a brand kit.

A hero film is the closest relative. For Starlit Homes, a custom home builder in Ontario, we staged the hero film from the founder's own construction photographs, and it loops behind the headline. A brand reel is meant to be watched start to finish, with music.

What goes into a brand reel?

Five things you already own: your logo, your colours, your fonts, the words on your website and screenshots or photos of your work. Nobody has to take a new photo.

The story comes from your business. Ours runs in the order a new client meets us: our mark, our name, the sites we have shipped, an AI answer that names us, and the promise on our homepage, "Get found, then get booked." Lotso Travel's opens on the roaming bill its customers dread, then shows the fix in three taps and the price it starts from. Each reel makes one argument, in the brand's own voice.

Where does a brand reel run?

The same reel works in four places: your homepage, a LinkedIn post, the opening slide of a pitch, and a screen in your showroom or at an event.

Most of those places start video with the sound off, and LinkedIn says feed videos "may play automatically without sound" as people scroll (help page). So a good reel tells its story in pictures and words first, and the score is a reward for the people who turn it on.

On your website, the reel sits lower on the page and waits until a visitor scrolls to it, so it never slows down your first screen.

When a small business does not need a brand reel

A reel is only as clear as what it is built from. Hold off if any of these sound like you.

  • Your brand is still changing. A reel locks your logo, colours and fonts into motion, so finish any redesign first.
  • Your website copy is weak. The reel quotes your site. If your headline doesn't say what you do, a reel repeats the problem with music under it. Our post on why custom web design beats templates covers where to start.
  • Buyers need something explained. If people are confused about how your service works, an explainer or a plain page will help more than twenty seconds of motion.
  • You already have strong footage. Good video of finished projects may do more as a hero film or sizzle reel.
  • There's no slot for it. A reel with no homepage spot, no LinkedIn presence and no pitch meetings sits in a folder.

A reel also doesn't replace being findable. A buyer who asks ChatGPT for a recommendation sees text, not your reel. Getting named in those answers is its own job, called answer engine optimization. The reel is what persuades them once they arrive.

What to check before you sign off on a brand reel

  1. Everything comes from your kit. Your actual logo, your colours, your fonts, your words.
  1. The logo looks right. Compare the reel's logo against your real one at full size.
  1. You can read every word. Pause on each text scene and read it out loud at normal speed.
  1. It works muted. Watch it once with the sound off, the way most people first see it.
  1. The music is yours to use. Ask who owns the score. Ours is original, with no licensed music or samples, so there is nothing to renew.

For a sense of how motion sits on a finished site, look at Zebra Home Cinema, a luxury home cinema installer whose site we rebuilt with a custom animation layer. When you are ready, ask us about a brand reel.
